Our Lady of Lluc

Way of the Mysteries of the Rosary, in Lluc

What is it?

The Way of the Mysteries of the Rosary, in the sanctuary of Luke, is probably the most monumental processional path in Majorca. It owes its name to the presence, along the route, of five large stone monuments dedicated to the Mysteries of the Rosary.

Who promotes it?

This path, with the five monuments, was opened in the Puig dels Misteris rock at the beginning of the twentieth century, following an idea of Antoni Gaudí, executed by two other great architects: Joan Rubió and Guillem Reynés. It was promoted by the prior Joaquim Rosselló under the impulse of modernization of the sanctuary of Lluc promoted by Bishop Pere Joan Campins.

What's pursuing?

To encourage reflection on the life of Jesus and Mary in a context of beauty, silence and contact with nature. The appropriate prayer to go through it is precisely the rosary, a traditional combination of Hail Marys and Our Fathers.

What is it like?

The road is all paved. Each of the five monuments has three bronze high reliefs, the work of the sculptor Josep Llimona. These fifteen medallions present as many scenes from the Mysteries of the Rosary (five of sorrow, five of joy and five of glory), typical of the New Testament. At the top of the hill, a large iron cross stands out. At its foot, there is a small artistic wrought iron monument that marks the crack where, according to tradition, a Muslim shepherd and a Christian friar found the holy figure of the Virgin of Luke. From the top of the hill, we can enjoy a splendid view of the Lluc valley and the Clot d'Albarca, surrounded by the Puig d'en Galileu, the Puig Roig and the Puig Tomir. In 2021, the fourth monument fell and its restoration was completed in 2024. The top of the hill can also be accessed by the stairs that go up directly from the Plaça del Lledoner.
