Sanctuary or destination point

Bellver Castle is a magnificent Gothic fortress with a circular plan, located on the Puig de sa Mesquida, at an altitude of 112m, and with panoramic views over the bay of Palma. It was built as a royal residence by King James II of Mallorca and it was built in just ten years, between 1300 and 1309. In 1717 it became a military prison and as such, it housed Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. In 1931, the Spanish government ceded the building to Palma City Council, which has built it into the city's History Museum and organize there cultural and recreational events. The strength is surrounded by the Bellver forest, an extensive pine forest that constitutes the largest green area in the city.
