Pancaritat in the chapel of the Sacred Stone

Calvià

Sanctuary or destination point

The Chapel of the Sacred Stone, located in a pine forest, was erected in 1929, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the Conquest of Mallorca. It was designed by Father Antoni Maria Alcover in the neo-Romanesque style. The portal has three archivolts and a tympanum with the sculpted images of Christ crucified, the Virgin Mary and the Magdalene. It is located at the Coll de sa Batalla, so called because the Battle of Portopí took place there (1229). The name of the chapel comes from a stone on which, according to tradition, the first mass in Mallorca after the Conquest was celebrated, celebrated as a funeral for the Counts of Montcada, who died in the aforementioned conflict. Today, this stone is behind the altar.
